Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever correct answers -is an infection caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a gram-
negative intracellular coccobacillus. It is spread by American dog ticks. It is characterized by fever with
relative bradycardia, malaise, headache, and rash within a week following the tick bite.
-The rash begins as a maculopapular rash involving the distal extremities and spreads centripetally
becoming more petechial and involves the palms and soles. It is most common in south-central and
southeastern United States, especially North Carolina and East Tennessee. It is treated with doxycycline.

Ehrlichiosis correct answers spread by ticks and causes shaking, chills, severe headache, and myalgias
but rarely causes rash.
Lyme disease correct answers spread by ticks and causes "bulls eye" rash at the site of the bite that
spreads outward
Contact dermatitis correct answers rash confined to the area of exposure, not associated with chills,
fever, or HA.
Treatment of Burn to the Oral commissure (ex:child chewing on electrical cord) correct answers -Do ECG,
check immunization status, ask about LOC, is Pt drinking?, any bleeding, any burns on other parts of

-Medication: Topical bacitracin to the commissure until the eschar is replaced by epithelium.

toxicity.
-If child has up-to-date immunizations, a tetanus booster is not necessary (this ex is a 18 m/o child)
-Burns to the oral commissure may result in immediate or delayed labial artery bleeding if the eschar
breaks down. As a result, these Pt's should be observed.
Degree of dehydration in children and Tx correct answers -In Mild acute dehydration, oral rehydration
therapy is the first step in management.
Necrotizing fasciitis correct answers -rapidly spreading infection along deep fascial planes w/ subq tissue
necrosis.
-typically caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or Staphylococcus aureus, but anaerobes and Clostridium
species may also be present
-may present purplish in color w/ bullae, putrid discharge, decreased sensation, and extreme pain.
Tx:
-Start empiric ABX
-Urgent surgical exploration is indicated w. aggressive debridement and should not be delayed for
culture or radiographic results.
