Story Telling in Business
Knowing how to tell a good story can be vital in the interview process.
What makes a good story?
- Compelling characters
- A problem to be solved
- A beginning, middle, and end
- Story description and dialogue
Compelling Characters
Those who undergo some kind of transformation. They're dynamic rather than static.
Someone who overcomes adversity and is changed by it for the better.
More detail is better, it adds depth and insight into the interviewees character
A Problem to be Solved
In fiction, it is a characters desire for revenge, redemption, keeping a long-held promise
to a loved one, etc. Without this desire, there is no story.
When asked a question that gives the opportunity to show how you've overcome
adversity, you need to give concrete, specific, answers to show how skillful you are at
overcoming and confronting challenges.
A Beginning, Middle, and an End
A good story will have a strong and meaningful resolution. If you're trying to entertain
someone (your interviewer) you will have to step outside of yourself and think about
how your audience will receive what you're telling them.
You should think carefully about how you describe events related to your professional
experiences. Keep it simple and straightforward but also meaningful.
Strong Description and Dialogue
One aspect of providing strong interview answers has to do with details - vivid
descriptions lend itself to more fully exploring and exposing the nature of any given
character or scene.
