An entry into the patient's bloodstream: a vascular acess
HD can be done in different ways:
- Standard in-center: in a dialysis center 3 times a week for 4 hours
- Nocturnal in-center: in a dialysis center at night 3 times a week for 8 hours
- Standard home: at home 3 times a week/every other day for 4-6 hours
- Short daily home: at home 5 or 6 days a week for 2.5-4 hours
- Nocturnal home: at home 3-7 nights a week for 8 hours
Peritoneal Dialysis
- Home treatment; uses tiny blood vessels in the peritoneum (lining of the abdomen).
- 7 days a week

Medicare End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Program
This program gives Medicare patients who have worked enough to qualify for Social
Security
Medicare (run by CMS--Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services)
pays 80%

There are more than 5,400 centers
