, The El Hiblu 3
Introduction
This report outlines the relevant details concerning the El Hiblu 3 case. Lamin, Abdul and Abdalla are three
teenage boys from Guinea who separately tried to flee to Europe. The boys tried to get to Europe via Libya,
where the living conditions are far from good. All three boys decided to flee to Europe by boat, hoping for a
better life. Due to an unfair trial, the boys ended up in a different kind of nightmare than the one they tried to
flee from.
Libya
In the first place Lamin, Abdul and Abdalla went to Libya to find a job. But then they found out that the living
conditions in Libya are far from good. People are abused, raped and murdered. They had to deal with human
smugglers and had to live in camps. Lamin found a job where he had to clean houses, but for three months he
did not get any payment. Eventually his boss offered to help him to travel to Europa.
Experience on the El Hiblu 1
Lamin, Abdul and Abdalla were scared on board of the overcrowded ship the El Hiblu 1. Lamin was one of the
few who spoke English on board and began translating the captain's messages to the rest of the people on
board. More boats were supposed to arrive along the way to take them to Europe. Those boats never came, so
the captain returned to Libya. The people on board were panicking and did not want to go back there. The
captain asked Lamin, Abdul and Abdalla to come into his cabin. He said that if they calmed down the people on
board, he would take them to Europe. The captain indicated that he only had enough fuel to sail to Malta.
Lamin delivered the captain's message to the rest of the people, which made everyone happy and relieved. 1
Their arrest
When the boat arrived at Malta, police officers were waiting in the harbor. It turned out that on their way to
Malta, the captain radioed the authorities that he was not in control of the ship. Lamin, Abdul and Abdalla were
taken off the ship in handcuffs. They were not afraid at first, because they thought it was a misunderstanding.
The boys were convinced that they would soon be released. Through their lawyer, Lamin, Abdul and Abdalla
were told that they were accused of terrorism.
