LE 7 – Animal Models of Kidney
Disease
December 6 t h , 2023
Why do we use animal models
Disease models
Drosophila
Low costs
Generation time: 10 days
Invertebrate
Malpighian tubules
Fast knock down
Malphigian tubules
Osmoregulatory system of insects. Has tubules that branch from the gut. Absorption and secretion of
ions, minerals, and water. Developmental processes are partially conserved.
, Zebrafish
Low costs
Generation time: 3 months
Vertebrate
Kidney: 2 nephrons
Fast gene knock down
Nephron segmentati on
Zebrafish have 2 nephrons. Nephron
segmentation is largely conserved. Protein
expression is similar in the conserved
segments. Zebrafish don’t need hoop of Henle
and collecting duct Freshwater fish don’t
need to conserve fluid. They want to get rid of
as much fluid as possible.
Example: expression of NCC in the DCT.
