, On 21st January 2022, Malaysian badminton player, Lee Zii Jia had made a decision to resign
from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). Before he tendered his resignation, he
had requested that he had his own team of coaches and his own sponsors as he was in a
struggling position to achieve a good result while competing in tournaments. BAM was not
able to fulfil and denied Zii Jia’s request. Zii Jia had commented that he was not able to deal
with the pressure of being under the national badminton team and could not cope with the
orderly lifestyle at the time. In response, deputy president of BAM, Datuk Seri Jahaberdeen
Mohamed Yunoos had declared that Zii Jia will not be registered for any tournaments for a
period of two years effective from 18th January 2022. Badminton fans were not pleased to hear
the news and this had been a trending topic all over social media with posts tagged

express their feelings. It has been known for netizens to typically leave negative comments for
badminton athletes on social media to express when they are displeased with their tournament
results. After achieving a title in the ‘All England’ tournament back in 2021, Zii Jia was finding
it hard to find his rhythm back when competing in other tournaments. He was suffering a foot
injury and had to be forced to retire in the quarterfinals of the World Championship 2021. For
that, he received a lot of backlashes from the media and wasn’t able to handle the pressure well.
For instance, @oceanbiru had brutally expressed his dissatisfaction by commenting “Singapore
will appreciate you more.” Moreover, a netizen had criticized Zii Jia publicly as seen in a
comment by @sbjaafar stating that “Mentally not strong. With his skills he should be pushing
