Critically explore the power dynamic
between researcher(s) and research
participants in qualitative investigations
involving children and young people. In
particular, examine the impact different
methods or methodological approaches can
have upon this dynamic relationship

In qualitative approaches to research there can be
unequal power dynamics. This is a particular
problem with children and young people. In this
assignment interview methods will be explored. It
will look at different ways of interview methods
and how power dynamics can occur. Finally the
research by Nishiyama (2018) will be analysed for
the approach taken to attempt to give power to all
the interviewees.

In research there are unequal relations of power.
In this assignment power dynamics are defined as
follow.
Who chooses what (and what not) to discuss, Who
can ask the questions and when they can be
answered and how. Who decides went to start and
end questioning. Power can be exchanged
amongst the interviewer and interviewee,
depending on certain circumstances of an
interview. (Talmy, 2011, p.143)

a group interviews for child research participants
to talk about the drawings and photographs, and
in this way the children’s reality came into view as
they explain things concerning the pictures that
were not evident without The elucidation“
(Einarsdottir, 2015, P. 138). As we can see from
the example using interviews as a research
method allows the researcher to really understand
what the children’s views were and for them to
discuss and share that opinion on the drawings
and photographs as an adult would not be able to
interpret those drawings and photographs in the
same perspective as the child. Therefore allowing
children to have a group interview give children
the autonomy to explain the images and drawings
in the way they see that the researcher may not
that way the researcher had a better
understanding of the children being interviewed
and their perspective of their work. Interviews are
a great method to allow the researcher to
understand the children and to really get an
opinion of what they think is important to
them. However, interviewing children in groups
meant that not all children would be comfortable
nor confident to share their views as they may not
want to open up in front of so many children. Even
if they do they may not express their views as
truly as they want to as they may be afraid.
Interviews are a research method that are useful
with children and young people because it allows
them to have the power to give their opinion
rather than adults over powering them.
