1.Thoroughly define what a solution is and give examples
a solution is a homogeneous mixture made up of a solute that is dissolved in a solvent to a
certain concentration. solutions are made up of a single phase and some examples: koolaid,
salt water, and sweet tea.
2.explain the energy changes throughout solvation
solvation is the process of solute-solute bonds being broken down and its energy increasing.
this process is called endothermic. exothermic is required to form solute-solvent bonds. This
net change in energy is called enthalpy.
3.define saturation and its two extremes
a solution is saturated when the maximum amount of solute has been dissolved. if less than
the maximum amount of solute has been dissolved, than it is unsaturated. but if it has
exceeded the maximum, it is super saturated.
4.using scientific term, explain which would dissolve more quickly and why:
granulated sugar or cube sugar?
the granulated sugar would dissolve quicker in a solvent because when it is granulated into
small particles, more surface area of the particle is exposed to the solvent. thus dissolving
quicker.
5.define molarity (M) and the proper way to make a 2M solution of NaCl
molarity is the amount in moles of a solute in one liter of a solution. to make the proper 2M
molarity solution you must measure out 2M of NaCl and place it in a beaker. then, add the
solvent to the beaker until the solution as a whole equals 1 liter
6.define molality and the proper way to make a 2M solution with NaCl
molality is the amount in moles of a solute in one kg of solvent. to make a 2molal solution of
NaCl, you measure 1 kg of solution, put it in a beaker, then add the 2molals of NaCl
7.define BPE and its cause
boiling point elevation is an increase in solute particles that raises the boiling point
8.define FPD and its cause
freezing point depression is an increase in solute particles that lowers the freezing point
9.which would have the largest effect on BPE and FPD and why: one mole of CaCl2 or
one mole of KCl
CaCl2 would have the largest effect on BPE and FPD because the amount of particle
molality would be greatest
10.if all of the following are types of solvation, explain how they are different:
hydration, ionization, and dislocation.
