This the file that was submitted for the final assignment of BBS1003. We received a grade of 9.0 for it, without any comments from the tutor. It was made to fit the criteria asked by the course coordinator. This was quite some work so hope it helps. Good luck!

, Research question 1:
Is there an effect of age on serum cholesterol levels in women?
1.1 Variables
Independent variable: Age (ratio level of measurement)
Dependent variable: Serum cholesterol levels (ratio level of measurement)

The level of measurement for both variables is ratio. This is because they are numeric variables of
which the raw data are continuous numeric measurements, where the position of 0 is not arbitrary.
Therefore, it is meaningful to consider an age or serum cholesterol level ratio. The group observed is
composed of women. Serum cholesterol levels were operationalized through blood tests, the age
through a questionnaire. For this research question, age is the independent variable as it may
partially explain differences in the dependent variable, the serum cholesterol levels.

1.2 Hypotheses
To test the relationship between two numeric variables, of which one is the independent variable, a
simple linear regression line is used. If there is no relationship between the two variables 𝛽1 will be
zero. If 𝛽1 is smaller than zero, there will be a negative relationship and if 𝛽1 is bigger than zero,
there will be a positive relationship.

𝐻0 : 𝛽1 =0
𝐻𝑎 : 𝛽1 ≠0

For this research question, the null hypothesis claims that there is no relationship between age and
serum cholesterol levels in women. The alternative-hypothesis claims that there is a relationship
between the two variables age and serum cholesterol levels in women.

1.3 Plots
For the first research question a scatter plot was deemed to fit best. A scatter plot allows us to see if
there is a relationship between the two numeric variables and what kind of a relationship it is
(negative or positive).

With the help of the regression line, it can
be seen that there is a weak positive
relationship between age (x-axis) and
cholesterol levels ( y-axis). As age increases
cholesterol levels rise. Additionally, many
outliers can be seen and the data is quite
dispersed, which tells us the relationship is
weak. Cholesterol levels in the plot range
from approximately 120 to 340 mg/dL.
