PLATE TECTONIC THEORY
The term plate was first coined by J. T. Wilson in 1965. Though this theory was
proposed by Harry.H. Hees in 1962.
The term ”tectonics” comes from the Greek word tektonikos , which means
building or construction.
The theory of plate tectonic states that the earth’s outer crust i.e. Lithosphere
is divided into [seven major and twenty minor plates] that move over the
asthenosphere, the molten portion of the mantle.
Plate tectonic is responsible for various geomorphic processes such as folding,
faulting etc. The theory provide the information about the distribution of
Oceans and Continents.
The seven major plates include:
1. North American plate
2. South American plate
3. Pacific plate
4. Antarctica plate
5. Eurasia & Adjacent oceanic plate
6. African plate
7. India-Australia - New Zealand plate
