1. Can you explain the post-(cold)war consensus?
Everyone agreed on the rough direction that the whole world should be taking at that
point: capitalism and neo-liberalism (trust in the free-market everywhere on earth upheld
politically). Anything but communism. This led to globalised capitalism which have started to
turn more and more alike.
- Dutch example: kabinet rutte 2
a. The consensus after the WW2: the larger parties in most political systems
most to the centre and abandoned their ideological struggles. There was a
consensus that the two world wars were the result of capitalism and that there
should be a mixed economy instead of die hard free-market mentality.
2. How does Fukuyama consider China?: he thinks that China will move towards our
western system. Andre thinks China was integrated into our global economy by
introducing cheap production.
3. If all humans strive for something good, how is a murderer striving for something
good when murdering someone is not good for the community?:
He thinks that everyone strives for what they themselves think is good. It may in
reality not actually be good. What is truly good is something that sustains virtuous
polis.
4. Cleavages: read the pages about what conflict is related to which party.
a. The industrial revolution: A lot of the wealth moving into the larger cities
making the agricultures weaker (agri vs industrial interests) and
workers/owners.
b. The national revolution: the french revolution, the power of the catholic church
is being pushed aside. National governments are taking over more and more:
