Calomiter (Serial dilutions of CuSO4)
Aim: to determine the concentration
Materials:
● Stock concentration of CuSO4
● Distilled water
● Cuvettes
Procedure:
1. Firstly fill the cuvette up till the tringle with distilled water. Place the cuvette into the
calorimeter and press the fine and coarse dials till the needle is set to zero point.
2. Remove the cuvette from the calorimeter. Take another cuevette and fill 0.1M of
CuSO4 up till the triable in the cuvette. Place this cuvette into the calorimeter and
read the absorbance.
3. Repeat the above steps for concentration 0.02M, 0.03M, 0.04M, 0.05M of CuSO4-
and the unknown.
Results table:
Concentration of CuSO4 Absorbance
0.01M 0.06
0.02M 0.09
0.03M 0.19
0.04M 0.18
0.05M 0.29
unknown 0.10
Conclusions:
From looking at the table of results you can observe that, as the concentration of CuSO4
increases the absorbance also increases. This is because at higher concentration there are
more ions in the solution, this makes it harder for light to pass through the solution, the light
hits more ions as it pases throught the absorb more light as the concentration of CuSO4 is
increased.
Unknown:
After drawing a line of best fit, and bloting the unknown absorbance in the y-axis wich is
0.10, i got to the conclusion that the concentration of CuSO4 is 0.022.
