P6 M3 unit 11 Health and Social Care

P6- Explain the role of supportive relationships in reducing the risk of abuse
and neglect:
M3- Discuss the role of supportive relationships in reducing the risk of abuse
and neglect, using examples:
In this assignment I will explain and discuss the supportive relationships in reducing
the risk of abuse and neglect, including examples.

When it comes to observation and the discussion of supportive relationships in terms
of reducing the risk of abuse and neglect, it is important to include the core principles.
One of which is the dignity. Thinking about dignity it is when the individual has the
right to be treated like a human being. This means that humans should be treated in
a human way and with the human rights. If someone is treated with dignity they have
a chance/right to make a decision on their own, this is without anyone interacting
with their decision and influencing it any way. Thinking about dignity in an alternative
way, it could also be explained by thinking of it as being treated with respect as the
individual has a chance to make a decision based on what they want/feel/think is
right. In the similar way with dignity respect could be linked. If the individual doesn’t
get the right to make a decision on their own, they are not really respected by the
people who have taken the right to choose/make a decision on their own. Treating
someone with respect is not making fun of them and being kind to them. Respect is
treating someone in the same way you would want to be treated. This could also
involve respect to the lifestyle of the individual and the choices they make as they are
more likely to know what is best for them.

An example of this could be an
elderly person is able to choose what
they want to eat for dinner. This is
fairly simple but there are times
when the carers do not take into
account what people in the care
homes wish to eat. In this case, an
elderly person gets a chance to
choose between the options of
broccoli salad with meat and mashed
potatoes or the other option is baked
beans. If for some reason the elderly
individual doesn’t like broccoli, the carers could provide the individual with the baked
beans instead. This is useful because the individual is able to choose what they would
want instead of the carer forcing the broccoli to an elderly person. Some of the
elderly people would want to be treated like adults and not children. This involves
planning and listening of the individual as if the carer doesn’t listen to the elderly
individual they are not going to know if they like broccoli or not. This means that the
individual is being treated with dignity and respect. This suggests that if you were on
the place of the elderly person, you would want to be able to choose the food you
like over the food you don’t like, this means that you want to be treated with respect,
too. This could be supported with the preferences of the individual which is what they
would choose over something.
