Enzymes
Discuss the chemical makeup of enzymes.
The enzymes are the specialized proteins. These are the bio-catalysts which are
responsible for supporting almost all the chemical reactions mainataining
animal homeostasis. Those are known as ENZYMES.
• Food digestion: Food taken in, is broken down into its component
nutrients to be absorbed and utilized by the body. These breaks like
pepsin, trysin lipase and amylase.
• DNA copying: To carryout the DNA copying, the body relies on the
enzymes like ligases, helicase.
• Energy production: Energy produced by the food generates energy and
passes to all organs and functions. It generates by using glucose.
CLASSIFICATION OF ENZYMES:
These are classified into 6Types:
1. Oxidoreductase.
2. Transferase.
3. Hydrolase.
4. Lyases.
5. Isomerase.
6. Ligases.
1. OXIDOREDUCTASE: It is a enzyme which involves both oxidation and
reduction. These are divided into 3sub classes. They are;
• Dehydrogenase- It catalyzes the removal of hydrogen from one substrate
and passes to second substrate.
• Oxidases- It catalyzes the removal of hydrogen from substrate and passes
to oxygen.
• Oxygenases- It catalyzes the incorporation of the oxygen directly into the
substrate.
2. TRANSFERASE: It is a enzyme which transfer a group from one substrate to
another. These are divided into 2sub classes. They are;
• Transaminase- The enzyme transfers the amino group from alanine to
oxatic-acetic acid.
• Phosphoryl transferase- The enzyme transfers the phosphate group from
the creatine phosphate.
