P5 – describe the roles and responsibilities of the personnel in
relation to infection prevention and control in a health or social
care setting:
When I did my placement in the nursery school the individual who was in
charge of infection, prevention and control was the school nurse as well as the
contribution of the assistant teachers.

People who helped in order to prevent the infection were teachers and
assistants. Their job was to ensure that the children in the nursery school had
the most efficient help and service in terms of hygiene and when dealing with
their infections. It is the teacher’s and teacher assistant’s job to send the child
to the school nurse if the child isn’t feeling well.

The teachers must report to the office and the school nurse if the child is
feeling poorly, they would then are responsible for ensuring that other
children in the class don’t get sick. If the child vomits, the teacher assistant
and the teacher itself are responsible to clean up the mess and sterilise it.

The receptionist and the office are responsible to call the parents and tell
them that their child is feeling sick. The office receives the message from the
teachers and the teacher assistants about the condition of the child and their
job is to inform their parents about it. In order to have a plan of action, the
parents have to agree and be aware of what medication or kind of help the
teachers and the school could provide for the child. For example, the parents
have to agree if the teachers are allowed to give the child any tablets. It is
illegal to give medication to child if the parents are unaware or they haven’t
agreed to it.

Once the receptionist received the instructions from their parents, they would
then send the message to the teachers and they would then proceed with their
action plan, depending on what the parent has agreed with. The role of the
teacher assistant is to help the teacher in support with the infected child.

When I did my work experience placement in the nursery school, I had a child
who vomited onto the floor. The main teacher in the class sends the child to
the school nurse who then examined the child and called in their parents. The
assistant teacher had to clean up the mess. I have also noticed that they have
used sterilising liquid in order to get rid of the microbes on the floor.

The teacher assistant would then place all of the tissues and mops used to
clean the mess up and put them into a separate bin bag. I have asked why
they wouldn’t put it into a normal bin and the assistant teacher said that; the
separate bin bag will stop the microbes and bacteria cells from spreading
