ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
Muscle contractions
AGONISTIC PAIRS
A pair of muscles is called an agonistic
pair.
MUSCULAR CONTRACTIONS
Contracting muscle is known as the
agonist ("in agony") During contractions, muscles can shorten,
opposing muscle is relaxing, known lengthen or stay the same.
as the antagonist Changing muscle length = DYNAMIC
stays the same STATIC
contractions are identified as being either
ISOTONIC or ISOMETRIC
ISOMETRIC
CONTRACTIONS
Muscle contracts but it does NOTI S O T O N I C C O N T R A C T I O N S
change length (no movement)
Performed under tension Muscle contracts and CHANGES
E.G a plank length under tension
Is broken down into 2 phases of
contraction:
CONCENTRIC
ECCENTRIC
E.G Bicep curl
CONCENTRIC CONTRACTION
Muscle SHORTENS under tension
E.G bicep curl ECCENTRIC CONTRACTION
Muscle LENGTHENS under tension
E.G tricep pushdown
