A BRIEF INTRODUCTIN TO THE JAMMU AND KASHMIR IN THE
CONTEXT
India is one of the largest among the South Asian countries. India has an area
of 32,87,263 sp.km and comprised of 28 states and 9 union territories. Jammu
and Kashmir is the northern most UT of the Subcontinental India that has been
created on 31st October, 2019, by an Act of Parliament bifurcating the east
while state/UT of J&K.
Location: The Jammu and Kashmir state is located between 32.17` North and
35.10`North latitudes and 73.26`East and 76.20`East longitude. It is also known
as “the Crown of India”.
Area: The state of J&K was founded by Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1846. The state
covered with an area of 42,241 sp.km and consist of 20 Districts, 6671 villages,
207 Tehsils and 2 Municipalities and Notified Area Committee.
Jammu and Kashmir state is famous for its Lush ever green beauty and Snow-
Covered Mountains [Himalayas] and also enriched in Culture and Heritage.
The state has international border with Pakistan from the west and Punjab and
Himachal Pradesh from the south.
J&K is the 2nd largest UT of India in Geographical and population after Ladakh
Region.
