3A.P1 Explain the cause of different infections and the diseases that
can result from them

In health and social care, it is vital to learn about the different diseases and what can be caused
by them (Rasheed ETL 2016). This assignment aims to focus on explaining the causes of
different infections and the diseases that can arise. This assignment will be explaining bacteria,
virus, parasites, fungi and reservoirs of infections.

Bacteria

To begin with, bacteria is a type of agent of infection which is a micro-organism that can cause
infections. In addition to this, it is a bacterium that can cause infections known as ‘pathogenic’.
Commonly, bacteria are located in the body and in the environment. There are instances where
the bacteria can be beneficial for the body and help digest foods, however the harmful bacteria
can make an individual feel ill. Continuing from this, the structure of a bacteria is different to
other cells as it does not have a nucleus. However, some bacteria cells have a flagellum which
contributes to the bacteria moving and spreading faster. A type of disease that is caused by
bacteria is called Tuberculosis, which is a serious condition that affects the lungs.
(www.nhsinform.scot, n.d.) As a result of this contagious disease; the individual forms a
persistent cough and develop a high temperature. Another type of disease that is caused by
bacteria is cholera, (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020) it is a fatal infection
which is caused by consuming contaminated food or water. 1 out of 10 people experience
extreme symptoms leading to severe dehydration which potentially leads to kidney failure and
death. In order to prevent the bacteria from spreading, PPE is required.

In addition to this, another type of agent of infection is viruses. Viruses are only visible to the
human eye when under an electron microscope. This is due to the incredibly miniature structure
they have. Viruses' regular tactic is to replicate inside a cell after damaging it and make copies
of the virus. After this, they leave the host cell and pass around the body to infect it further.
However, viruses do not survive for very long after the body. A type of disease that is caused by
viruses is a common cold. (NHS Choices, 2021) Commonly, a common cold is known to be an
infection of your nose and throat. This infection can't be treated with the right antibiotics and the
pain can only be eased by painkillers, drinking plenty of water and resting. GPS also
