CHEM 120 Week # 1 DQ 1 – Scientific Method and Calculations
CHEM 120 Week # 1 DQ 1 – Scientific Method and Calculations CHEM120 Week 1 Scientific Method & Calculations Let’s explore the scientific method. Here is the situation: We are planting a garden. We have a variety of bulbs & potted plants. We do not have any directions on how or when to plant each of these items. We do not have any gardening books, magazines, or access to the Internet (Oh, the horror!). We need to observe a number of characteristics for these plants. What are some of the characteristics that we want to observe? What might be your initial hypothesis? How would you set up an experiment to test your hypothesis? Question No.: Will an artificial light source yield the same plant health & growth rates as natural light from the sun? Hypothesis: Both bulbs & potted plants will be healthier & grow faster under natural light from the sun. Procedure: Step # 1 – Buy 2 bulbs & 2 potted plants. Then place them in separate pots with the same amount of soil. Step # 2 – Label each pot with the type of light it will receive, either artificial light or natural light. Step # 3 – Take 1 bulb & 1 potted plant to be placed under artificial light. Step # 4 – Take 1 bulb & 1 potted plant to be placed under natural light. Step # 5 – Water each plant with 2 cups of water daily. Step # 6 – Watch & analyze each plant’s health & growth rate. Step # 7 – After 2 weeks, compare your results.
