Describe somatic symptom disorder, and if the disorder can be diagnosed if the person has an actual physical illness. Somatic symptom disorder occurs when an individual suffers anxiety about physical symptoms. Normally, the individual suffering from this disorder gets intense feelings and thoughts about the symptoms that they are experiencing that they cannot efficiently perform daily activities because they believe that the problem is life threatening. In some cases, the anxiety never improves even after the patient is assured that their test results are normal. The disorder can be diagnosed if the person has actual physical illness because specific real symptoms are accurate indicators of an underlying illness. In such a case, a physical cause will be found using different medical tests and the patient receives the necessary medical care. Describe the basic criteria for schizophrenia based on the current DSM criteria. Explain the differences between negative and positive symptoms.
