Information system concepts and technologies
information system collect raw data and then it processed and organized to produce
meaningful information.
example can be a total sales revenue system

Characteristics of quality information

accessible- should be easily accessible by authorized users.
accurate - should be error free. inaccurate information is generated because
inaccurate data is fed into the system. (GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT)
complete- includes all the relevant/important information
economical - there's a cost associated with producing the information.
flexible - to make valuable decisions
relevant - it should be relevant to the context. stock market prices fluctuations
doesn't necessarily needed by a farmer.
reliable - the reliability of the information is dependent on the reliability of the data
collection method. it depends on the source of the information.
secure - only accessible for authorized users.
simple - simple but not complex. it will be helpful to identify correct information for
decision making.
timely - it should be updated. outdated information is not very useful for present
decision making.
verifiable - to check/identify if the information is correct or not.

System
a system is,

a package with interrelated components
has boundaries
has a common objective

interrelated means it depends on the other and to function a component fully, other must
be present.
it is comprised of 3 components - input, process, output

Subsystems and sub-subsystems

, subsystem is a system within a system. example like a university is a system and the
different faculties are the subsystems.
sub-subsystem is system within a subsystem. example like a faculty is a subsystem
and the different departments are the sub-subsystems.

Closed system vs Open systems

open system - able to interact with other systems in order to share information.
examples: a shopping website launching a card provider's system
closed system: not able to interact with other systems. do not communicate with
any other system. hackers can't access from the outside. organization has full
control.

Information system

Computer based information system

uses computers to collect, process, store, analyze and distribute information for a
specific purpose, such as meeting a business objective.
the computer is the major component in the information system.
these following components are there.

, there are five major technologies

mobile
social media
internet of things
cloud computing
big data

there should be two components in effective IT infrastructure

flexible - characterized with connectivity, compatibility and modularity (modularity
means that diving each of the whole software into components to make it more
simple to identify and understand) The basic principle of Modularity is that “Systems
should be built from cohesive, loosely coupled components (modules)” which means
s system should be made up of different components that are united and work
together in an efficient way and such components have a well-defined function
robust - provide information with accuracy, timeliness, reliability, security and
confidentiality

An information infrastructure consists of the physical facilities, services, and
management that support all shared computing resources in an organization.
There are five major components of the infrastructure:
