An emotion is a personal experience. It involves physiological responses, subjective feelings, and expressvie
behaviour.
Basic emotions:
Joy/happiness
Sadness
Disgust
Anger
Fear
Triggers of emotion
External:
- An event being observed
Internal
- Thoughts
Three Elements of Emotion
Subjective feelings
- The personal experience of an emotion.
Subjective feelings cannot be measured through behaviour, as subjective feelings can be associated
with various emotions.
Ways of measuring subjective feelings:
Subjective:
Questionnaires, rating scales, self-monitoring, and interviews
Objective:
fMRI
Expressive behaviours
- Any action consciously or unconsciously communicating emotions.
Physiological responses
- An involuntary and automatic response within our bodies
Fight or Flight Response = Sympathetic nervous system
Rest and Digest = Parasympathetic nervous system
Topic Two: Universality of Emotions
There have been various studies suggesting emotions are universal
Charles Darwin:
- Animals use facial expressions to communicate emotions
Blind/deaf babies:
- Babies who are born blind and deaf use the same facial expressions as babies who are not blind and deaf,
suggesting emotions are innate
