The care and treatment of children. Child health is the purview of paediatrics, which
became a medical specialty, which became a medical specialty in the mid-nineteenth
century.
Life – Threatening Condition
A condition for which curative treatment may be feasible but can fail. A life-threatening
condition is usually of shirt duration with an acute or unexpected onset and may or may
not occur in the context of a pre-existing life-limiting condition.
Multi – Organ Problems
Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) also known as Multiple organ failure
(MOF), Total Organ Failure (TOF) or Multisystem organ failure (MSOF), is altered
organ function in an acutely ill patient requiring medical intervention to achieve
homeostasis.
Acutely Ill
Any illness that develops quickly, is intense or severe and lasts a relatively short period
of time. An acute illness or injury is a medical problem with a rapid onset. Acute illnesses
include bacterial and viral infections, as well as sudden and short acting physical
symptoms.
Chronically Ill
A chronic illness is one that lasts for a long period of time and typically cannot be cured.
It is, however, sometimes treatable and manageable. This means that with some chronic
illnesses, you or your loved one can return to everyday activities.
With other chronic illnesses, it may be difficult to participate in everyday activities or the
condition may be progressive, getting worse with time.
High Acuity
Typically it means a patient who is very sick, or in danger of becoming very sick. High
acuity means that the nursing involves patients with a potentially life – threatening
condition involving disruption of one or more principal organ systems.
Emergency Situations
An emergency is a situation that poses an immediate risk to health, life, property, or
environment. Most emergencies require urgent intervention to prevent a worsening of the
situation, although in some situations, mitigation may not be possible.

Assessment
Many infectious diseases begin subtly.
A day or so later, a rash develops. With many disorders, children are infectious just
before and just after the rash appears.
Rashes can be difficult to identify.
Nursing Diagnosis
Pain related to pruritus from skin lesions.
Impaired skin integrity related to rash, pruritus, and scratching.
Risk for infection r/t presence of infective organism in sibling or family member.
Altered body temperature r/t to systemic infection.
Fluid volume deficit r/t insensible fluid loss from increased body temperature.
Knowledge deficit r/t disease prognosis, prevention, and treatment.
Social isolation r/t precautions required to prevent infection transmission.
Deficient diversional activity r/t activity restriction and precautions to prevent disease
infection.

MCO: viruses, bacteria, rickettsiae, helminthes, and fungi.
