AEOLIAN PROCESS AND LANDFORMS
It refers specially to the winds ability to shape the surface of the earth.
Wind may erode, transport and deposit material. Aeolian processes are
important in arid and semi – arid environment such as deserts.
Transportation by Wind:
There are three methods of transportation by wind:
1. Saltiation: Transported through a “Series of bounces”.
2. Suspension: Particles are lifted high into the atmosphere and are carried
a great distance before they settle.
3. Rolling a Traction: The movement of particles on ground.
Deposition by Wind:
1. Reduction in velocity
2. Any obstruction to wind
3. Increase load
Aeolian Landforms:
These landforms are shaped by the action of wind on the earth’s surface. These
landforms result from the transportation and deposition of sediment by wind.
The landform include: Ventifacts, Sand dunes, Desert pavements, Los Deposit,
etc.
1. Ventifacts: Ventifacts are formed by abrasion effect and they’re relatively
rare.
