LEARNING OUTCOME 1:

Understand Psychological perspecties

P1 explain the principal psychological perspecties and D1 analyse psychological
perspecties in relaton to naturennurture

A psychological perspectie is a iiewpoint that proiides certain assumptons about human
behaiiour and how humans functonn There isn’t one correct way to study human behaiiour so
psychologists deielop diferent theories and explanatons to help gain a beter understandingn In
psychology there are numerous perspectiessapproaches to suggest reasons for behaiiours, with
scientfic research and methods to help support these ideasn There is much debate as to why we
behaie the way we do and what causes thisn There are strong arguments for whether human
behaiiour is biological and humans are subject to innate processes or whether our unique
eniironments infuence our behaiiour thus therefore resultng in the nature is nurture debaten In
health and social care setngs, practtoners need to consider all of these perspecties when
analysing and discussing behaiiour of a patent as they can infuence how they respond and treat a
patentn Mcceeod 妀n 2(007).n

To explain and understand human behaiiour, psychologists ofen debate between the infuence of
nature and nurturen This is an on-going debate with theories and scientfic research to support both
sides of the argumentn Arguments to support nature theories include the impact of genetcs and
hormones on human functoningn A person’s genes are inherited from past generatons, which could
suggest hereditary and eiolutonary infuences as well as bodily processes on the body and
behaiiourn The nurture side of the argument refers to the past and present eniironments of a
person and the experiences they haie had, and how this has infuenced their growthn Mgoodtherapy

The Biological Approach

The biological approach is the study of animal and human behaiiour through the analysis of
genetcs, physiology and brain functoningn In the nature isn nurture debate the biological approach
would argue that human behaiiour is nature as we are subject to innate processes, such as how the
central nerious system worksn This approach would suggest that behaiiour is determined by
biological processes, which could be inherited The genetc make-up of an indiiidual, or the release of
hormones by the endocrine system inen adrenaline can therefore afect human behaiiour, and
functoning, Mumenlearning 2(017).n Concepts under this approach would suggest that behaiiours are
inherited and passed down through generatons, which could explain and suggest reasons as to why
humans haie “irratonall fears, which preiious ancestors may haie hadn As a result of this approach
it is thought that behaiiour is adaptie to enable suriiial, which was proposed by Charles Darwin
through his theory of natural selectonn He proposed there was suriiial of the fitest with organisms
with superior traits and characteristcs were more likely to suriiie and adapt Meiolie. to their
surroundingsn MCherry Kn 2(017).n

The infuence of genetcs on human behaiiour is a key argument for the biological approachn Galton
belieied that a person’s intellectual ability was infuenced by their genetcs, which would haie been
therefore inherited from their familyn He thought that his own success, and that of his cousin Charles
