If an individual is impaired this could mean that their physical, cognitve or sensory development and
ability have been afected and impacted. This could mean that there is reduced ability in bodily
functons or diferences in the bodyss structure. There iill stll be some ability of functon but they
may not functon to a level of ihat is expected. If a person is impaired it may prevent a them from
carrying out day to day life as easily as others. (merriamiebster 2018). If a person is physically
impaired this can result in an individual having difculty iith their mobility, their speech, their
language and their ability to do physical tasks. This could mean that basic life functons such as
eatng independently are impacted. They may have to use a iheelchair as they may not be able to
ialk independently or only be able to ialk for short distances. Physical impairment can mean that
an individual needs help iith their personal care. Examples of physical impairments can include
amputatons, fractures as iell as illnesses and conditons like muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy.
(doemass 2006).

Sensory impairment is the partal or permanent loss of the body senses functons. This can include
physical and psychological senses such as memory and sight. The senses can be disturbed and
damaged ihich can prevent their normal functons. personss vision, hearing, smell, touch, taste
and spatal aiareness can be impacted and functon as it should. Someone may experience dual
sensory loss ihere they lose or have tio damaged senses. (deaflindinformaton 2018). Cognitve
impairment can refer to the decline in cognitve abilites and hoi this has been impacted. This can
result in an individual having difculty iith their memory as they may forget names and have
difculty iith language as they may struggle to recall or pronounce certain iords. Someone may
have issues iith their thinking as they can struggle iith their concentraton. Individuals can notce a
change in their cognitve functons but it iill not usually have signifcant impact on their daily life.
The senses can be impaired as a result of the natural ageing process, illnesses like dementa or as a
result of a stroke. (healthdirect 2018).

If someone has a disability this iill include impairments on cognitve, physical and sensory
development as iell as result in permanent efects. disability can impact someoness day to day life
as they may need assistance iith mobility, speech and learning. n individual may have a reduced
ability in communicaton and interactons. (heartofengland 2018). In someone has a physical
disability their mobility and movement can be impacted. This can result in difculty of movement or
no movement at all in parts of the body (paralysis). This may mean that an individual has to use
iheelchair or other methods to help their mobility. Physical disabilites may be a result of birth
defects, illnesses, a personss age and if they have experienced accidents that have caused the
impairment. Examples of physical disabilites include cerebral palsy, cystc fbrosis, diarfsm, spinal
cord injury and multple sclerosis. (lds 2018).

Cognitve disabilites can refer to impacts on cognitve and mental functoning. This can impact
someoness communicaton, their use and ability to demonstrate social skills and impact their
functoning on a daily basis. n individual iith cognitve disabilites can take longer to reach
developmental milestones like learning to speak or ialk. These disabilites can result in impairment
of the memory, problem solving, atenton, reading and verbal understanding. This can mean that an
