Topic: Women’s role in the Space of race
Kwame Nkrumah’s text has vividly concentrated on the history of people across the
globe. His story is relevant to the topic of discussion because it provides insight into how
women played a role in gender and racial discrimination. Connecting the research topic to
Kwame Nkrumah’s text and the historical context between the 1940s and 1960s involves
deeply examining how women participated in the complex dynamics of race and gender
discrimination in the community, locally and globally. There are many ways in which women
participated in racial and gender discrimination, as per Nkrumah’s context.
For instance, women played a crucial role in the spare race when the United States
competed with the Soviet Union to achieve a milestone in space exploration. During this
time, men had predominately dominated the industry. The majority of the workforce and
senior staff were men. However, the contributions of women such as Valentina Tereshkova
and the Women of NASA showed an example of how women could impact the community.
Breaking the dominance of men, Valentina Tereshkova became the first soviet cosmonaut to
venture into space in 1963 (The San Diego Union-Tribune, n.d.). She piloted the Vostok 6
spacecraft with her companion, highlighting the strength and power of a woman. Her
achievements market history in the pace race since more women were encouraged and
motivated to participate in space exploration. On the other hand, her actions strengthened the
women’s rights movement in the first for equal rights and opportunities. Therefore, she
inspired people that regardless of their weakness, they can utilise it to uplift themselves.
Apart from her, the Women of NASA also had tremendous influence in the space race. For
instance, African women mathematicians such as Katherine Johnson and Mary Johnson made
a crucial calculation for NASA’s early space mission (National Geographic, n.d.). Their
contribution highlights the struggles African American women experienced in their fight for
