Planning for Each Question

How and why might the two works you have studied be considered inspirational

➢ Persepolis
○ Rebellion- Recognize and speak out against oppressive governments. Stand for
the phrase “might is right”, the struggles of the character can make the readers
aware of the development of the character in the course of the book, especially in
a coming of age book.
○ Marji in search of identity - e.g the half veiled panel, supports and inspires others
to do so. Juxtaposition.
○ Heroism within her family. Dramatic irony used for soldiers.

➢ 1984
○ Rebellion- Julia’s spirit is inspirational
○ Context- Orwell’s aim is to inspire the audience to protest and prevent totalitarian
governments from coming into fruition

➢ The Tempest
○ The hardships overcome by Prospero are presented by Prospero to be
inspirational (a tale of overcoming oppression)
○ Miranda’s purity/innocence in the midst of her father’s twisted games and all the
corruption around her

How do the writers of the two works you have studied convey a sense of place to their
readers and to what purpose

➢ Persepolis
○ Name of the book (Persepolis) is a place, where the ancient kings of Iran were
buried
○ How: Setting changes throughout the book
■ Iran
■ Austria
■ Tyrol
■ Paris
■ Purpose: reflects Marjane’s travels and the ways in which her
opinions/personality changes throughout her life
● In each place, she does adopt a different personality
● Each place has a different connotation
○ Eg. Austria- everyone is ugly because she doesn’t like the
place
○ Techniques to convey a sense of place:

,Context
Literary devices

➢ 1984
○ Oceania
○ Airstrip 1
○ Place reflects old england

➢ The Tempest
○ Place is interesting in this book since the entire island is a creation of Prospero’s
magic

To what extent do the two works you have studied show that an individual is in control of
his or her own destiny

➢ Persepolis

➢ 1984
○ Winston hardly in control of his destiny, he ends making wrong choices and
getting beaten up with his worst fear-rats by O'brien. In this manner he mirrors
the author who also had lost control during the production of the book-hardly had
any publishers-animal farm as well.
➢ The Tempest
○ Prospero acts as Shakespeare (the author) in manipulating the other characters
of the book to create a storyline of his liking, to meet his own ends. Prospero’s
sense of justice begins to seem, if not perfect, at least sympathetic. Moreover,
the means he uses to achieve justice mirrors the machinations of the artist, who
also seeks to enable others to see his view of the world. Playwrights arrange
their stories in such a way that their own idea of justice is imposed upon events.
