Master’s level education is required in most countries to prepare for advanced

professional roles. This reflection aims to provide the roles of a master’s-prepared nurse in

the 21st century as one of the most important concepts learned this week. Nursing is becoming

a more defined profession because of the modification of health policies, the advent of new

drugs and treatment methods, and the global shortage of nurses and other medical

practitioners such as doctors (Thobaity & Alshammari, 2020). The roles of a masters-

prepared nurse are also likely to change due to the advancement in technology. Therefore, the

skills and abilities required by master’s-prepared nurses for effective practice are also

provided in this essay.

Master’s prepared nurses in the 21st century will maintain the traditional clinical role

of nurse practitioner, anesthetist, nurse midwife, or clinical nurse specialist. Secondly, they

will provide administrative oversight roles such as managers, supervisors, or primary care

administrators. Lastly, they may be charged with high-level leadership roles such as being

executives in large health care organizations. Master’s prepared nurses require additional

skills and abilities to effectively perform the above functions. These include excellent

administrative skills, technological competency, interprofessional collaboration, acute care,

nursing informatics, and the integration of evidence-based practice in clinical care. Edwards

et al. (2018) reported that master’s prepared nurses significantly impact the quality,

efficiencies, and effectiveness of health care systems through their contribution to clinical

practice, advocacy in health policy, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based

practice, and assistance in nursing education.
