PHARMACOLOGY

PHARMACON-DRUG : LOGOS-DISCOURSE IN
Deals with interaction of exogenous administered chemical molecules with
living systems or any single
chemical substance which can produce a biological response is a DRUG.
For 1000 years most drug were crude natural products of unknown
composition and limited efficacy.
The mechanism of action including molecular target of many drugs has been
elucidated.
This is possible due to prolific growth of pharmacology which forms the
backbone of rational therapeutics.
THERE ARE TWO DIVISIONS IN PHARMACOLOGY
● PHARMACOKINETICS
● PHARMACODYNAMICS

PHARMACODYNAMICS
WHAT DRUG DOES TO THE BODY?
Includes physiological and biochemical effects of drug and their
mechanism of action at organ system/subcelluar/macromolecularlevels

PHARMACOKINETICS
WHAT BODY DOES TO THE DRUG?
Refer to movements of drugs in an alteration of the body :includes absorption,
distribution,binding/storage bio transformation and excretion of the drug.

Sources of Drugs: An Overview
When it comes to medication, it is important to understand the sources of drugs and their significance in
medication. Drugs can be derived from both natural and synthetic sources, each with its own advantages and
disadvantages.

Natural Sources of Drugs
Natural sources of drugs include plants, animals, and minerals. Many traditional medicines are derived from
plant extracts, which have been used for centuries to treat various ailments. For instance, the bark of the willow
tree contains salicin, a chemical similar to aspirin, which is used to treat pain and inflammation.

Synthetic Sources of Drugs
Synthetic drugs, on the other hand, are chemically created in a laboratory. These drugs are designed to mimic
the effects of natural drugs, but with greater potency and consistency. Synthetic drugs can be produced in large
quantities, making them more accessible and affordable.

Importance of Drugs in Medication
Drugs play a critical role in medication, providing relief from symptoms, treating diseases, and improving the
quality of life for many people. Understanding the sources of drugs is essential in developing new medications,
improving existing ones, and ensuring their safe and effective use.

Pharmaceutical Preparations and Cosmetic Technology
Pharmaceutical preparations involve the processing of active ingredients to create a formulation that is safe and
effective for use. Cosmetic technology plays a critical role in this process, particularly in the development of
drugs for skin care products.
Cosmetic technology encompasses the scientific and technical approaches used to design and produce cosmetics
and personal care products. In the pharmaceutical industry, cosmetic technology is used to formulate drugs for
topical application. The technology enables the creation of drug formulations that are stable, safe, and effective
for use on the skin.
Cosmetic technology includes various techniques for incorporating active ingredients into drug formulations.
These techniques may involve the use of emulsifiers, solvents, or other excipients to enhance the drug's stability
and bioavailability. Additionally, cosmetic technology may involve the use of nanotechnology to improve drug
delivery to the skin.
The use of cosmetic technology in pharmaceutical preparations has numerous advantages. For instance, it
allows for the development of drugs that are more targeted and effective in treating specific skin conditions.
Additionally, it enables the creation of drugs that are more aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly, which can
lead to improved patient compliance.
