DRUGS AFFECTING THE EYE
- Background.
- Drugs affecting the eye pupil size.
- Drugs affecting intraocular pressure.
- Miscellaneous.
BACKGROUND
Autonomically, the eye functions are controlled by parasympathetic and sympathetic nerve supplies.
1- Parasympathetic:
• Constrictor pupillae muscle & ciliary muscle (M3)
• Cornea and conjunctiva (M3)
• Lacrimal gland (M3)
2- Sympathetic:
• Dilator pupillae muscle (alpha-1) & Ciliary muscle (beta-2)
• Ciliary body epithelium (alpha-2 inhibit aqueous humour secretion; beta-2 stimulates
aqueous humour secretion)
• Blood vessels (alpha-1)
.
Agents used for treatment of eye disease conditions may be given systemically or topically as eye drops, eye
ointments, or eye lotion. Some agents are given intracameral (intra-chamber) in surgery.
Agents and drugs acting on the eye can be classified according to their nature of action into:
A. Drugs affecting eye pupil size (miotics & mydriatics)
B. Drugs affecting IOP (used for glaucoma)
C. Other drugs (local anaesthetics, antibacterials, anti-inflammatories, antiallergics, …etc)
