Learning Objectives
After completion of this lesson, the learner will be able to:
1. Explain the relevance of laboratory data for acid-base balances.
2. Differentiate between metabolic alkalosis and acidosis.
3. Differentiate between respiratory alkalosis and acidosis.
4. Identify care concerns for clients experiencing acid-base imbalances.
Scenario Overview
This Video Case Study focuses on the concept of acid-base balance and appropriate nursing care. The case
study gives the learner the opportunity to explore relevant client information that includes laboratory data, as
well as to understand acid-base balances, and differentiate between metabolic alkalosis, metabolic acidosis,
respiratory alkalosis, and respiratory acidosis. The learner can also practice using clinical judgment through
formulating appropriate nursing responses when caring for a client experiencing an acid-base imbalance.
