Scope of Microbiology
, INTRODUCTION
• The science of microbiology dates back only 200 years,
there was recent discovery of Mycobacterium tubercullo
DNA in 3000-year-old Egyptian mummies
•
• It reminds us that microorganisms have been around for
longer. In fact, bacterial ancestors were the first living c
appear on Earth.
,• Microbiology is the study of microorganisms that are usu
less than 1mm in diameter which requires some form of
magnification (Microscope) to be seen clearly
• Examples:
• Viruses
• Bacteria
• Fungi
• Algae
• Protozoa
Some times the helminths are included but most are
macroscopic
, • Other organisms studied by microbiologists can also be visual
without amplification [bread molds and filamentous algae]
• These organisms are included in the discipline of microbiol
because of similarities in properties and techniques used to
them
• Microorganisms typically live in complex microbial
communities and their activities are regulated by interac
with each other, with their environments, and with othe
organisms.
