Improving the Relationship Between Law Enforcement Officials and Local Residents
Our communities have high crime rates because of a poor relationship between
enforcement officials and residents. The preceding scenario has led residents to perceive law
enforcement officers as enemies rather than protectors of the law. Also, the poor relationship has
caused police officers to lack understanding of residents’ needs, goals, problems, and preferences
resulting in high crime rates, homelessness, loss of lives, and poverty. When there is a high crime
rate in a community, the locals live in fear, which impacts their economic activities since they
are afraid to go to work, operate their businesses, or send their kids to school. In addition, people
who have suffered at the hands of criminals through attacks have lost their loved ones and spend
a lot of money on medical expenses to treat the wounded. The residents must care about this

becomes available. Second, the police should post policies on the print media and their website
on citizens' complaints, use of force, and other issues. The law enforcement officers must ensure
that the information is easily accessible to the public. All police departments' policies should be
made public for review and frequently post on their websites information about arrests, police
