An Annotated Bibliography for Improving the Relationship Between Law Enforcement
Officials and Local Residents
Our communities have high crime rates and other related problems because of a poor
relationship between enforcement officials and local residents. The poor relationship has caused
police officers to lack understanding of local residents’ needs, goals, problems, and preferences
resulting in high crime rates, homelessness, loss of lives, and poverty. When there is a high crime
rate in a community, the locals live in fear, which impacts their economic activities since they
are afraid to go to work, operate their businesses, or send their kids to school. In addition, those
attacked have lost their loved ones and spend a lot of money on medical expenses to treat the
wounded. The local residents must care about this problem because it is big, affects everyone in
our communities, and needs to be solved. Residents perceive law enforcement officers as
adversaries rather than upholders of the law because of the strained relationship between them
and the community's citizens. It needs to be improved.
