Title of Presentation: Mental Effects of War

General Purpose: The purpose of my speech is to inform my audience of the effects of war
Specific Purpose: The specific purpose of this speech is to explain the mental effects of war on soldiers .
Thesis Statement: Trauma due to war affects the mind and lives of soldiers
I. Introduction
A. Attention-getter: More than 80% of army suicides occur in the USA (Lineberry & O'Connor,
2012)
B. Relevance statement: Most combat soldiers witness violence and deaths during war.
C. Credibility statement: Majority of American soldiers have witnessed injuries that are both
physical and emotional that they live with long after they come from war.
D. Preview statement: Veterans and their families have heightened stress-related mental health
problems as a result of the psychological effects of war, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD), which has a detrimental impact on their lives.
Transition: Now let's look at the mental effects of war on soldiers
II. Body
A. War transforms veterans in a negative way.
1. Veterans of war become easily irritated and angry over issues
a. Some soldiers start unnecessary arguments for no good reason which may lead to
fights.
b. Aggressive driving and too much drinking behavior on the part of veterans
2. A veteran feels alienated and moods change without warning and they feel angry and
resentful over issues
Transition: having understood how war negatively transforms the lives of veterans, let’s turn our attention to
Trauma
B. Soldiers who have taken part in combat wars experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorders
1. Experiencing nightmares and flashbacks during sleep and seeing horror images of dead
bodies, patients with missing arms, and getting scared by loud noises.
2. Veterans suffer emotional numbing due to trauma and interpersonal impairment in war-
zones
a. Veterans become more withdrawn because they may feel not recognized
b. Maintaining friendship with partners can be challenging because veterans of war
are not interested in maintaining them (Carter, 2013) .
