Case Study: The Pizza Puzzle
Background
The case study revolves around Sharon Coombs, the restaurant and food service manager for the
Marigold Inn, and the ethical nature of her decision regarding a new advertisement. Sharon
Coombs reports to George, General Manager of Marigold Inn, regarding the progress of her
works. She wants to boost the room service business by delivering pizza to customer rooms.
Relevant Facts
Sharon has observed that the room service business is in decline and it's related to the pizza
delivery customers have from other firms. She addressed this issue by including pizza on the
menu and even purchased a pizza oven. However, the expected increase in sales wasn't achieved
due to a lack of quality. Then she worked to improve the quality of the pizza made to market
standard.
Though, the quality improvement came the sales didn't increase. This made her notice that the
issue is the perception of customers rather than the quality of the pizza. Customers believe that
this establishment that focuses on traditional steak and seafood will not make quality and
authentic pizza. To address this misconception she proposed a new approach to George.
The approach is to create a new image for the pizza they made as "Napoli Pizza". This would
create a traditional and authentic feel to the pizza. This process needs an advertisement, new
attires for the waitress, and a separate phone number.
