Androgynous
Androgynous means being neither male nor female nor both male and female. Feminism holds that
human nature is androgynous.
-This relates to the feminist idea of men and women being equal due to our human nature being equal.
Sex vs Gender
-sex is the biological criteria to signify whether an individual is male or female. There are 3 sexes male,
female, and intersex.
-gender is social construct and defined as the configurations of behaviour or activities involved in being
masculine or feminine. Gender is a continuum and is not as simply defined as sex.
-it is important to know the difference between sex and gender as there is too much confusion between
the two.
Cisgender
-A term used for an individual whose gender identity and/or expression aligns with the sex they were
assigned at birth.
-Cisgender is an example of gender-inclusive language. Which is a fairly new concept that is influenced
and supported by 3rd wave feminism.

-Doing gender is when an individual conforms to interactions and activities associated with their gender,
such as a female being submissive.
-Feminists want to push us away from the pressures of doing gender.

We end up using male constructs to deconstruct male constructs. Which will never work because the

-Intersectionality refers to the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as gender, sexuality,

privilege and therefore differing experiences as a woman. For example life experiences of straight
women are different than the life experiences of lesbian or bisexual women.

The suffrage movement was the movement advocating for MOST women's right to vote. The suffrage
movement did not include certain groups of women such as indigenous women and the intellectually
