NR 603 Week 1 Compare and Contrast Assignment: Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo and Meniere’s Disease
This discussion is about comparing and contrasting between Benign Positional Vertigo (BPV) and Meniere’s disease (MD). BPV and MD are both a neurological disorder with similar signs and symptoms that may cause a challenge for providers to diagnosis. BPV is a common type of vertigo that is a treatable peripheral vestibular disorder that occurs suddenly, with brief episodes and is caused from changing the position of the head and my even have signs of nystagmus (Argaet, et al, 2019). This can occur when you go from bending down/over to standing up, rolling over in bed or even extending your neck so you can look up (You, et al, 2018). This should go away on its own or once it’s been treated. MD is an inner ear disorder that is characterized by recurrent and/or sudden onset of vertigo (Schub, 2018). The vertigo in this case can last a few minutes, to several hours or longer. (Schub, 2018). The patient my experience the feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear hearing loss and even the effects of tinnitus (Schub, 2018). MD can cause significant adverse effects of the quality of life (Schub, 2018). It is important for providers to perform a thorough history, physical exam and any testing that may need to be done in order to diagnosis BPV or MD.
