overcome these problems?
Human resource is a vital asset for any firm. Human resource management deals with the
recruiting, selecting, inducting, and training of employees based on the applicable labor laws of
the country. Furthermore, HRM includes providing benefits and motivating employees while
ensuring their safety and welfare. There are various challenges associated with managing human
resources including communication gaps, managing performance gaps, and leadership
development (Sherman, 2021).
As companies become more global managers have to deal with employees with diverse cultural
backgrounds. This will present a difficult challenge for managers to communicate their
instructions or corporates goals. Understanding cultural gaps and building cultural intelligence
are important to overcome these challenges. Managers can focus on the training and
development aspect of HRM to ensure that the staffs are adequately prepared to work in a cross-
cultural environment.
The second challenge managers face is handling performance problems without affecting their
relationship with their team members. The current business environment is fiercer than ever
before hence continuous performance improvement is a requirement. Managers should
encourage employees to further their education and find specific career goals. A study shows that
94% of employees prefer to work longer for a company that invests in their professional
development (Sherman, 2021). This should be coupled with effective communication of goals
and consistent encouragement.
Another challenge is related to leadership development. HR managers are required to develop a
structure, process, and method to select and develop the future leaders of the organization
(Perkbox, 2021). This starts by ensuring the right employee are retained, trained, and equipped to
take leadership roles. This requires significant planning and strategizing to become effective. HR
managers should use benefits and compensation for retention and development through training
programs for development.
Personally, if you were a Human Resource Manager, what’s the biggest strength you would
bring the role? What would your biggest challenge be?
