○ Thepre-independencestagehasseensomemoreimportanteventsasthephasemarked
thepresenceofmorethan600banks.
○ ThebankingsysteminIndiabeganwiththeestablishmentoftheBankofHindustanin
1771,butitshutitsoperationsby1832
○ Thephasealsowitnessedtheallianceof3majorbanks,thatis,BankofBengal,Bankof
Bombay,andBankofMadras.ThesebankswereamalgamatedtobecalledtheImperial
Bank.TheStateBankofIndia(SBI)tookovertheImperialBankin1955
