communication, with the main focus on verbal communication. Based on your experience
in UoPeople, do you think these challenges are also applicable to your written interaction
with other students? Why or why not. Offer a specific example.
Communication can be understood as the process of transferring information to create
understanding (Corporate Finance Institute, 2019). Communication can be done vocally, in
written form, visually, or non-verbally. The choice of communication channels and medium is
dependent on various conditions like geographical proximity, the content of the message, the
level of secrecy required, and other factors.
Individuals need to develop their communication skills to have a successful personal and
professional life. Having good communication skills is necessary to be productive when working
with other people. This is especially true when you are part of cross-cultural teams with different
styles of communication. Lack of good communication skills may lead to misunderstanding and
frustration.
Different communication styles are cultivated by the individual's culture, norms, values, and
other aspects. Some people prefer to use expressive words and speak directly, while others prefer
to take an indirect approach. These differences may act as communication barriers and impede
the smooth flow of information (Sennett, 2022). I believe challenges faced when using verbal
communication can apply to written communication as well.
One of the challenges I faced while working on group activities is pointing out mistakes made by
my teammates. I often use subtle words to convey the message rather than using explicit words
to show respect for the other person. This was normal in my country but they assumed that I was
giving them positive feedback. That miscommunication made us lose a few points on our group
project. However, it was a great lesson for me on how to phrase my words and communicate my
thought clearly while being polite and respectful.
The author proposes four strategies to overcome these challenges. Do or do not you
consider these strategies applicable to the group activities you participate in as part of your
MBA program at UoPeople? Why or why not. Offer a specific example.
