Point 1: Research the background science

Brine shrimps are small, saltwater crustaceans; the adults are about 8mm in
length. They are relatively easy to keep in the laboratory and will produce dormant
egg cysts that hatch to produce young shrimp larvae.

Brine shrimps inhabit the extreme environment of salt lakes, which have
seasonal or cyclical droughts and dry out completely. They are consumers that feed
on photosynthesising phytoplankton. The lack of competitors (or predators) in this
extreme environment allows them to build large populations during seasons when
the conditions for reproduction are suitable (warmth, sunlight, range of salt
concentration, water). This extremophile organism can endure long periods of
drought in a cyst (tiny egg) stage and emerge in the nauplii stage when the
conditions are suitable. The nauplii develop into reproductive adults when
conditions are favourable (salt concentrations at correct salinity) and by cyst-like
eggs that can survive in dry conditions when the conditions start to become less
favourable (salt concentrations become great as dry seasons approach). This is
because of their ability to carry out osmoregulation at a high rate.
