Section 1 20 Questions j Time—25 Minutes Directions: Read each of the passages carefully, then answer the questions that come after them. The answer to each question may be stated overtly or only implied. You will not have to use outside knowledge to answer the questions—all the material you will need will be in the passage itself. In some cases, you will be asked to read two related passages and answer questions about their relationship to one another. Mark the letter of your choice on your answer sheet. Questions 1–2 are based on the following passage. The Iliad, one of the great works of the ancient Greek poet Homer, relates the story of Achilles. As Homer tells it, Achilles was the son of Peleus, king of the Myrmidons of Phthia in Thessaly. His paternal grandfather Aeacus was, according to the legend recounted in the Iliad, the son of Zeus himself. The story of the childhood of Achilles in Homer differs from that given by later writers. According to Homer, Achilles was brought up by his mother in Phthia with his cousin and intimate friend Patroclus. Achilles learned the arts of war and eloquence from Phoenix, while Chiron (a Centaur) taught him music and medicine. 1. The passage makes clear that writers other than Homer describe Achilles’s (A) childhood as different than Homer’s description. (B) closest friend as not being Patroclus. (C) succession to the Myrmidonian throne as going unchallenged. (D) primary instructors as his mother and father and not Phoenix and Chiron. (E) childhood in more detail than does Homer. 2. According to the passage, Peleus’s father was (A) Phthia (B) Patroclus (C) Aeacus (D) Chiron (E) Zeus
