, I. Background
Rembang is the capital of Rembang Regency which is also the center of
government and economy of Rembang Regency. The city of Rembang, located on
the north coast of Java Island, boasts a rich maritime heritage. With a busy port,
this city is the center of trade and maritime transportation activities. Connecting
various regions through an efficient maritime network. The beauty of Rembang
harbor strengthens the city's ties with the sea, creating a harmonious balance
between land life and maritime life. This city has an active port making it a vital
maritime transportation center for regional trade. Apart from that, cultural
diversity is reflected in the traditions, arts and culinary delights of Rembang. With
a rich historical heritage, the city exudes its charm through its historic buildings.
Thong Thong Lek is a musical instrument in the form of a bell made of bamboo
and then played accompanied by music, both traditional and modern music. The
term Thong Thong Lek itself comes from the words "kenthongan" and "literate".
"Kentongan" is a piece of bamboo measuring approximately 60 cm, which is
hollowed out along the groove of the bamboo. Meanwhile, the word Lek "Melek"
comes from Javanese which means awakened. Thong Thong lek is a traditional art
that always decorates the month of Ramadan. Usually the Thong Thong Lek art is
held during the fasting month leading up to the Eid al-Fitr holiday. Around 1975,
the Rembang Regency government decided to hold the Thong Thong Lek
Festival. The players play Thong Thong Lek around Rembang City carrying a set
of musical instruments. Transported using vehicles such as cars or trucks and
equipped with a large sound system. The people of Rembang are very enthusiastic
about this art which is performed en masse and only comes once a year. In
general, it functions as a medium for entertainment and communication, as a
unifier for the people of Rembang City, as well as teaching harmony from various
socio-economic backgrounds. Apart from entertaining the public, of course
preserving traditional arts, which are the ideas of the elders of Rembang Regency.
