● Started in Central Asia and Middle East Spread to North India.
● Partly as a reaction against the worldly life of Umayyad
Caliphate.
● Recognised that the instruction and the teachings of
Hasan-al-Basri of Iraq soon known as Sufism.
● Emerged in India with the role of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti of
Ajmer.

● Sufism expressed its devotion to God in three ways: poetry,music
and dance of love towards God.
● Bashara(Sufi saints bounded by Sharia) and Beshara(not
bounded by Sharia).
● Pir or Khwaja or Murshid : Sufi spiritual guide or Guru-He lived in
Khanqah.
● Devotion is more important than fasting and prayer or Namaz.
● They believe that love and devotion are the only means of
reaching to God.
