Midterm Media, Time And Space 2022

1. In Lisa Parks’s discussion of her concept of “infrastructural a ects,” she urges us to
“excavat[e] the various dispositions, feelings, or sensations people experience during
encounters with infrastructure sites, facilities, or processes” (p. 107). To put that concept
to work, choose an example from one of the following three class lms: Lo and Behold,
The Forgotten Space, Parasite. Your example might be an ordinary citizen’s everyday
experience, a worker’s mundane practices, an oft-neglected, invisible condition, the
perspective of an expert such as scholar, engineer or economist, or some other aspect of
the experience of infrastructure that the lms engage with. Use this example to explain and
argue for the usefulness of Parks’s concept in understanding how a given infrastructure
produces and depends upon certain a ective experiences. What does this approach
illuminate about your example? (5 points)

(196 woorden)

2. A number of theorists we’ve read argue that the history of who and what can be made
public—as well as the very distinction between private and public—depends crucially on
changes in media technologies (Habermas, Petersen, boyd, Dean). As Petersen writes,
“[o]ur very conceptions of what it means to be public have a media history in that they are
produced in signi cant part by the material and cultural means of making public” (p. 154).
Making direct and speci c reference to one or more of these readings from week three,
elaborate upon the sort of public(s) (or counterpublic(s) or common) “a orded” by print
media versus the Internet (e.g. SNSs (social network sites)). What di erence do these
