1. Plant tissue culture comprises cultivation of plant organs,
tissues or cells in vessels using artificial media, and is often
called in vitro techniques.
2. In certain situations, conventional breeding methods have
to be supplemented with in vitro techniques either to
increase their efficiency or to be able to achieve an objective,
which is not possible through the conventional methods.
3. The in vitro techniques were developed initially to
demonstrate the totipotency of plant cells predicted by
Haberlandt in 1902.
