Using the international classification of disease
A. Explain how the international system of disease classification works.
International Classification of Diseases (ICD), in medicine, diagnostic tool that is used to
classify and monitor causes of injury and death and that maintains information for health
analyses, such as the study of mortality (death) and morbidity (illness) trends. The ICD is
designed to promote international compatibility in health data collecting and reporting.
There are four main types of disease: infectious diseases, deficiency diseases, hereditary
diseases (including both genetic diseases and non-genetic hereditary diseases), and
physiological diseases. Diseases can also be classified in other ways, such as
communicable versus non-communicable diseases.
B. Evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. This should contain amongst other things,
how helpful it is for medical staff, how easy it is to use, whether it is able to include all
incidences of poor health.
The health care provider institutions such as hospitals are subjects that should facilitate
implementation of medical applications that follows the patient medical condition and facts
connected with him. The definitive diagnosis that can be coded using ICD can be achieved
after several visits of patient and rarely during the first visit.
That includes fair payment. The new more granular coding system will allow physicians to
more accurately report the complexity of care they provide, differentiating between chronic
patients who come in for routine blood work and those who require an entirely new treatment
regimen.
On a macro level, the mountain of new data that will be generated by ICD-10 can also be
mined for the greater good of public health, allowing the U.S. to track and respond to global
health threats faster and compare best practices with the international community.
Another potential positive of ICD-10 is that it will likely result in fewer fraudulent and
exaggerated claims, which drive up the cost of medical care and health insurance premiums
for all.
