General aims of the South African Curriculum. This statement gives
expression to knowledge, skills and values that need to be learnt in South
African Schools. This is to ensure that children acquire the necessary skills
and knowledge to apply during their lives. In context, the curriculum
promotes knowledge in local context, while keeping social imperatives in
mind.
The National Curriculum Statement serves the purpose of:
Equipping learners without judging their background, gender, race etc
Providing access to higher education
Helping learners transition from higher education to the work environment.
Providing employers with a completed sufficient learner profile.
The curriculum is based on the following principles:
Social transformation - looking at imbalances of the past are caught up and
redressed and equal educational opportunities are given.
Active and critical learning - encouraging an active and critical approach to
learning
High knowledge and high skills - High standards are set and we encourage
learners to get achievable standards.
Progression - content and context of each grade shows progression from
simple to complex.
Human rights, environmental and social justice - infusing the principles and
practices of social justice.
Valuing indigenous knowledge systems - Acknowledging the rich history
anD heritage of this country
